Catnip (Nepatia cataria) is a plant native to North America. Fresh leaves of the catnip plant have a
fresh mint-like scent, while dried leaves, stems and flower heads smell like alfalfa
hay.
When cats have contact with this
catnip,
either in its fresh or dried form, it causes a peculiar reaction called the catnip response. The primary active
plant chemical is nepetalactone. Catnip is
generally believed not to be toxic to
cats. Catnip does not have the
same effect on dogs or other animals.
The catnip response includes initial investigation, grasping and kicking,
it may involve oral contact, and then after about 2 to 3 minutes your cat
will lose interest.
(Generally the catnip
response can average about 6 minutes but is most intense for 2-3 minutes. Male and female cats of reproductive age are more sensitive to catnip than very young or old cats.
Some cats have no interest at all. Some
cats may have an experience one time and
then never again. Each cat is
different in how it reacts to catnip.)

One internet article suggests that the behavior pattern associated with catnip may be more closely related to predatory behavior. A cat’s reaction to the detection and capture of prey parallels many of the phases of the catnip response. Pawing and marking, clasping and rolling onto the side, and rhythmic kicking with the back feet are common to hunting behaviors and the catnip response
is similar in many respects.
Catnip is commonly
incorporated into cat toys. Dried catnip can be sprinkled on the surface
of scratch posts to attract a cat’s interest.
Many people grow catnip in indoor gardens
which
may help distract cats from chewing ornamental houseplants some of which are
poisonous to cats. (In our
opinion, a better distraction to keep your kitty away from house plants is a
fresh pot of kitty grass.)
How to Use Catnip:
-
Use catnip to attract cats to toys, scratching and bedding
products. Our catnip is organic, pure and potent. A spoonful is
usually sufficient. The amount needed varies from kitty to kitty.
Experiment with your kitty to determine what makes your kitty happyl
-
Lightly squeeze catnip with your fingers to help
release the catnip's active ingredient.
-
The aromatic oils in catnip naturally fade over time.
When your kitty's interest in catnip or catnip filled toys changes, you will
know that it's time to add or purchase more fresh dried catnip.
-
Keep catnip fresh by storing it in an air tight container.
Store in a cool, dark place out of your kitty's reach.
